Augsburg confirm injury setback for Jeffrey Gouweleeuw

Augsburg captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (34) featured in his club’s first four Bundesliga games of the season but suffered a torn medial ligament in his left knee during their 4-1 defeat against Mainz on Matchday 4, ruling the Dutchman out of the Fuggerstädter’s next six games.

Gouweleeuw made his return at the weekend, playing 28 minutes in Augsburg’s 3-2 loss at Stuttgart, but his club have since confirmed some bitter news.

The central-defender missed training on Tuesday due to renewed pain in his knee, and Augsburg have since confirmed that Gouweleeuw has suffered another medial ligament injury, which would need surgery, sidelining FCA’s captain for the foreseeable future.

According to Kicker, Gouweleeuw is unlikely to play again in 2025.

It’s a huge blow for Sandro Wagner’s side, who sit 15th but are level on points (7) with St. Pauli, who occupy the relegation playoff after 10 games, with just two wins in the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign.
