Preview: Borussia Dortmund vs Freiburg

For the first fixture of gameweek 21, we will see Borussia Dortmund hosting Freiburg on Friday night at the Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund had won 100% of their matches in 2024 until they stumbled last week by drawing 0-0 away to newly promoted Heidenheim. Dortmund will be continuing their quest to remain in the top four as they have RB Leipzig chasing their tails in 5th place and just one point behind.

Freiburg currently sit in 7th place and are chasing a Europa League spot. Christian Streich’s side have had mixed results lately, with three losses, two wins and a draw in their last six matches. A much needed boost is important for Freiburg when they go into their Europa league fixture against Lens in the knockout stage next week.

This fixture has always had plenty of goals as there was an average of over five goals per game for the last two seasons.

Team News

Dortmund were without several key players last week but are hoping that Marco Reus, Julian Brandt and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel will return to the side after recovering from illness over the past two weeks.

Karim Adeyemi and Felix Nmecha will remain out as well as Jadon Sancho whilst Sebastian Haller has made it to the final of the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast, so will miss another week.

For Freiburg, they are boosted by the return of attacker Ritsu Doan as he has now returned from the Asian cup after Japan were knocked out.

Merlin Rohl is suspended after being sent off early in the match against Stuttgart last weekend. Matthias Ginter, Philipp Lienhart and Daniel Kofi-Kyereh are also out with injuries.
