Could Bayer Leverkusen be given a golden Meisterschale?

Bayer Leverkusen are set to win their maiden Bundesliga title win if they avoid defeat at the weekend against Werder Bremen. But, can they be given a Golden Meisterschale if they go unbeaten?

Bild reports that the DFL have not closed the door on the possibility of Leverkusen being given a special variation of the Meisterschale if they remain unbeaten on top of the traditional trophy given at the end of the season. The idea is inspired by Arsenal, who in the 2003-04 season went unbeaten and were given a golden version of the Premier League trophy in addition.

No team in the men’s German top flight has ever gone unbeaten the whole season with the only teams doing it being BFC Dynamo in 1982 in the East German football league and Dresdner SC in the Gauliga Sachsen in 1943.

While in the Frauen Bundesliga, Wolfsburg went unbeaten in 2020, but they were not given a golden variation in addition to the traditional trophy.

No matter if Leverkusen go unbeaten or not, they will be presented with the trophy in the final game of the season against Augsburg on the 18th of May.
