Marseille interested in Axel Witsel

French side Olympique Marseille are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Alex Witsel, according to Kicker

The Belgian international is currently searching for a new team as his contract is due to run out at the end of June.

It’s reported that Witsel (33) would be Marseille’s ideal replacement for Boubacar Kamara who is moving to Premier League side Aston Villa.

The Ligue 1 side have offered Witsel a two-year deal with a reported salary of €4m plus an option for a third year.

Witsel joined Borussia Dortmund from Tianjin for €20 million in 2018 and has played 145 games in all competitions, becoming an important player under Lucien Favre and Marco Rose as BVB’s No. 6.

Although not a like-for-like replacement, Borussia Dortmund signed Salih Özcan from FC Köln and will add important ball-winning abilities to BVB’s midfield.

Speaking about his departure, Witsel said: “I’m sad to be leaving the club, I have a lot of friends and great teammates here. Those were four years of my life, that’s a lot. I’m looking forward to the last game, but I’ll also be really sad.”
