In this weekly feature, hosts of the Gegenpressing podcast Stefan Bienkowski and Manu Veth face off with their predictions for the forthcoming Bundesliga matchday fixtures. It’s three points for a correct score and one point for a correct result. Who will come out on top at the end of the season?
Stefan’s game of the week: Union Berlin vs RB Leipzig
In more ways than one, Saturday’s Topspiel will be a clash of two very different football clubs. On the one hand you have one team that is undoubtedly defined by the loyalty and passion of its fans against a club constructed to sell energy drinks. Then, on the other, you have one club punching above their weight and riding a wave of good fortune against a star-studded squad that have stuttered in the opening rounds of the new season. Whichever way this game goes, it will undoubtedly be fascinating for fans and neutrals alike.
- Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1 Hertha Berlin
- Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Werder Bremen
- Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 Hoffenheim
- Wolfsburg 1-1 Schalke
- Augsburg 1-2 Mainz
- Stuttgart 1-2 Freiburg
- Union Berlin 2-3 RB Leipzig
- Eintracht Frankfurt 0-1 Köln
- Bochum 0-3 Bayern Munich
Manu’s game of the week: Wolfsburg vs Schalke
My match of the week is Wolfsburg against Schalke for one simple reason: Rodrigo Zalazar. The Uruguayan playmaker has been a joy to watch this season and is without a doubt Schalke’s most important player. Zalazar aside, I think this could be a very well-balanced match. Schalke have positively surprised me at the start of the season and might be just alright to fight off relegation. Wolfsburg too had a decent outing against Bayern Munich on Sunday and will try to build on that experience. That game aside, I want to give a notable mention to Stuttgart against Freiburg, which is a Baden-Württemberg derby.
- Gladbach 2-1 Hertha
- Dortmund 4-1 Werder
- Leverkusen 3-1 Hoffenheim
- Wolfsburg 2-2 Schalke
- Augsburg 1-2 Mainz
- Stuttgart 1-2 Freiburg
- Union 1-2 Leipzig
- Frankfurt 2-1 Köln
- Bochum 1-3 Bayern
Scores after MD2: Manu – 8, Stefan – 7
