‘We have a lot of work ahead of us’ – Erik ten Hag reflects on Bayer Leverkusen defeat

Bayer Leverkusen suffered a shock 2-1 defeat against Hoffenheim in Erik ten Hag’s first Bundesliga game in charge of the BayArena outfit. In what was a flat and sluggish performance, the Dutchman analysed his side’s loss where chances were few and far between.

“Clearly, I’m disappointed,” said Ten Hag. “It was a game of few chances and Hoffenheim were more effective. We did not get into the final third of the pitch often enough. Twice we did not pay attention and we conceded a goal.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us which is not unexpected. From my experience it may take some time. But we need to remain calm and keep working.”

Jarell Quansah opened the scoring for Bayer Leverkusen in the sixth minute, but goals from Fisnik Asllani and Tim Lemperle secured a 2-1 win for visiting Hoffenheim.

Leverkusen travel to Werder Bremen next weekend before games against Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
