Bayer Leverkusen has announced former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as their new head coach, replacing Xabi Alonso.
ten Hag signs a contract at the BayArena until 2027. On moving to Leverkusen, the Dutchman said:
“Bayer04 is one of the best clubs in Germany and also belongs to the extended European elite. The club offers excellent conditions, and the discussions with the management have impressed me greatly.”
The former Manchester United manager will replace Xabi Alonso as Leverkusen head coach. Yesterday, it was announced that Alonso will become the new Real Madrid manager, and Leverkusen will receive €13-15m from the Spanish side for the former midfielder.
ten Hag will have a tough task on his hands at Leverkusen. Not only will he have to deal with the departures of key players in Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong and most importantly, Florian Wirtz, but he will also have to lead a refresh of a squad that lost any sort of momentum at the end of the season as their title defence fizzled out.
The Dutchman does have experience in Germany as he was previously Bayern Munich II’s head coach between 2013 and 2015 under Pep Guardiola. At the Bayern second team, ten Hag won the Regionalliga Bayern and also coached players such as Mitchell Weiser.
