Chelsea’s Renato Veiga on Bayern Munich’s shortlist

Fabrizio Romano reports that FC Bayern Munich are interested in bringing Chelsea defensive specialist Renato Veiga back to the Bundesliga. The 21-year-old is apparently on the shortlist of central defensive candidates targeted by the German giants. Romano does note that the former FC Augsburg loanee if a rumored sale of Kim Min-Jae is completed.

Those responsible for covering the Bundesliga remain quite familiar with the story of Veiga’s professional journey. The now five-times-capped international was considered a total flop during his half-season spent on loan at Augsburg during the 2022/23 campaign.

Veiga delivered subpar performances in seven starts under then FCA head coach Enrico Maaßen between February and May of 2023. Augsburg found themselves so disappointed in the then 19-year-old that they cut his year-long-loan stint short after the season.

The rest is history. Veiga’s parent club Sporting CP sold him to FC Basel in August 2023. After a successful season in Switzerland, Chelsea shelled out €14m for the Lisbon native. Success with both the Blues and on loan with Juventus in the Serie A have enabled him to kick-start his career.

Veiga left Germany’s Fuggerstadt valued only as a €1m player. At present, Veiga maintains an estimated market worth of €25m. Several German top flight sides have been linked with a move for him since he managed to gain traction abroad.
