Saudi sports newspapers Arryadia and Okaz Sports report that Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Julian Weigl may be on the move to Al-Shabab. The former German international recently found himself eliminated from his Bundesliga club’s leadership council and surely fancies a change of scenery. Kicker and Sport Bild confirm Weigl’s departure should be near, but do not mention specific clubs.
The two Saudi sources – both relayed by transfermarkt.de – claim that talks between Al-Shabab and Gladbach have already taken place. Two Red Bull clubs – Leeds and RB Salzburg – are also reported to be interested in the 29-year-old. In the case of Leeds, Weigl could be reunited with former BMG head coach Daniel Farke.
Weigl remained on the bench throughout all 90 minutes of Gladbach’s opening round Pokal tie against SV Atlas Delmenhorst on Sunday. The fierce competition for midfield places in Gerardo Seoane’s squad leaves Weigl without much playing prospects this season, even if he did enjoy a decent training camp.
Gladbach look to cut back in midfield before the transfer window closes, also offloading Weigl’s fellow former German international Florian Neuhaus after the latter was caught criticizing sporting director Roland Virkus in an online video this summer.
