Bayern Munich opt to retain Paul Wanner for now

Kicker reports that a summer move for Bayern Munich attacking prospect Paul Wanner is off the table for now. The Bundesliga record champions apparently wish to hold onto the 19-year-old throughout training camp and give him a solid look. Wanner shall receive a chance to prove himself.

The logic behind such a decision remains fairly obvious. Jamal Musiala’s long-term injury leaves Bayern in need of a regular in the ten-slot. While the German giants continue to consider external solutions, it makes perfect sense to give Wanner an audition at the player’s best position.

Prior to Musiala’s injury, the plan was to loan Wanner back out again this season. Stuttgart and Werder Bremen served as the most likely destinations for a time. Looser links with Eintracht Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Borussia Mönchengladbach also cropped up.

The increasing unlikelihood that Bayern will be able to secure the services of Stuttgart star Nick Woltemade translates to an excellent chance for Wanner. It should nevertheless be emphasized that there’s still a long way to go before the season starts and the transfer window closes.

Wanner could yet be loaned out. The Münchener Abendzeitung still believes that a loan stands as the most likely scenario. The ultimate winners in this case may very well end up being Bremen. Should Bayern find themselves unimpressed with Wanner in the next six weeks, he could be shipped north.

Bremen have sought to acquire Wanner, using a potential re-unification with Wanner’s former SV Elversberg mentor Horst Steffen as the biggest selling point. The injury-plagued Hanseaten might end up getting an addition they desperately need.
