Bayern Munich pushed hard to sign Nico Woltemade but failed in their transfer after being unable to reach an agreement with Stuttgart. Speaking after Thursday’s win against Tottenham, Max Eberl was asked whether they are still interested in signing the German forward, to which Bayern’s sporting director quashed reports of any further discussions to sign Woltemade.
“We made efforts for the player,” said Eberl. “Stuttgart didn’t signal to us that they were willing to talk, so the topic is off the table. I can’t say more about that at the moment.”
As GGFN reported last month, Stuttgart had set a deadline to submit an offer for Woltemade, which expires before August 16 when the two teams play each other in the Super Cup. But after VfB rejected Bayern’s offer of €55m for Woltemade, it’s unlikely that last season’s champions would match Stuttgart’s valuation which is around €80m.
Nick Woltemade’s breakout season in the Bundesliga
Although Woltemade has made 30 Bundesliga appearances for Werder Bremen in the 2023/24 campaign, he had only shown glimpses of excellence before joining Stuttgart on a free transfer last summer. In his first year at VfB, the German attacker – who plays more as a No. 10 despite his height – scored 17 goals and provided three assists in 33 games across all competitions last season as the Swabian club went on to lift the DFB Pokal.
